• Thompson adds special education center to Riverview for $369,000 - Loveland Reporter-Herald

Riverview School will have an intensive learning center when it opens for the 2021-22 school year after the Thompson school board agreed to add $369,000 to the construction budget to include that space in the new school.

The board voted unanimously and without comment at its Wednesday meeting to approve the addition to the school, which is being built in Thompson River Ranch east of Interstate 25.

An intensive learning center is dedicated space to provide special education programs for certain students with “high academic, behavioral, physical and social-emotional needs.” They are housed at several schools within the district — 10 elementary schools, five middle schools and all four large high schools — and are currently serving 344 students.

At Riverview School, the center will encompass an extra 1,850 square feet of space with two classrooms, two bathrooms and one storage area. This addition will be rolled into construction of Riverview School, which will be one of the district’s largest schools with a capacity of 1,000 students across preschool through eighth grade.

The cost will be on top of the previously approved $45 million construction budget from the 2018 voter-approved bond. The $369,000 will come out of a $12.8 million contingency fund set aside for unexpected costs that may arise across all of the bond projects.

Design work has been underway for the new school during the past year and some groundwork had begun. A groundbreaking is scheduled March 9 with construction to follow over the next year with a goal of opening the school in August 2021.

Initially, district staff also recommended pulling money from the contingency fund to change the six-lane breezeway track that is planned for the new school to a competition level track with synthetic turf. The vision was that the school could host a districtwide track meet with that type of facility.

However, that recommendation was withdrawn because there is not enough room for the necessary parking and bleachers for a competition.

“We’ll have a track, but we won’t have seating capacity nor will we have parking capacity, so it’s not the best use of our resources,” Superintendent Marc Schaffer said.

So the new recommendation was to stick with the track as originally designed, which with a crusher fine surface and seating for about 200 is similar to other middle schools in the district.

Board members agreed with the recommendation to keep the track as originally designed. Because the design and the cost will not change, the board did not vote on the matter.
