    22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time   Cycle C

    Welcome children to their worship space.

    Ask them to get their carpet squares and sit down in a circle.

    Introduce yourself and your helpers.

    Ask:  Can anyone tell me what we talked about last week?  <show symbol of door>  We talked about how God helps us become better people.  We talked about how we need to prepare ourselves to enter heaven.

    Introduce symbol
    Say:   Today’s symbol is the Number One.  Don’t we all think that we are Number One?  And that Number One is the best?  If a team wins a game, what do we call them?  <Number One>  Who are the winners in our world today?  <rich people, politicians, movie stars, rock stars, etc.>  Today we are going to talk about what Jesus had to say about being Number One, about being first.

    Say:  Let’s look at today’s poster.  What does it say? <God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor.>  This is our Responsorial Psalm for today.  The Responsorial Psalms also come from Scripture, from the Book of Psalms in the Old Testament.

    Ask:  In our world today, are the poor Number One?  Are they the winners?  What do you think?  <discuss>
    Introduce readings
    We have two readings today.

    Say:  Let’s light the candle to show that we are ready to listen to the Words of God.

    Say: Today’s first reading is from the Old Testament book of Sirach. (Sirach 3:17-18, 20)  In Sirach we hear a new word, HUMBLE.  Can anyone tell me what the word HUMBLE means? <It means low or ordinary.> When someone is humble, they don’t put themselves first, they treat everyone as if they were very important.  Let’s listen.

    Have the reader read the first reading.

    Ask: If you are important, how can you ACT humble?  <by being nice to others, by treating them as if they were special>  How did Jesus tell us to treat other people? <He told us that we should treat other people the way we would treat Jesus.>

    Say: Now it is time for the Responsorial Psalm.  Your part is to say:
    God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor.

    Say:  Today’s Gospel reading comes from the book of Luke.  (Lk 14:1, 7-14).  Jesus went to a party, a wedding feast.  He watched some of the guests and how they acted. He used their behavior at the party to tell us how we should behave all the time.  He had something to say to the guests and something else to say to the man hosting the party.  Listen closely and see if you can hear what Jesus said to each of these people.

    Say:  Now we will stand and get ready to hear the Gospel
    (hold up card)  Alleluia, Alleluia.

    Have the reader begin: “a reading from the holy gospel.....”

    Read:  Read the Gospel

    Ask:  What do you think this story was all about?  <discuss>   What did Jesus tell the guests?  <not to take the best seats, not to put themselves first>  What did Jesus tell the host of the party?  <to invite people who couldn’t repay his hospitality>

    Explain:  Usually when you have a party, you invite your friends and then when they have parties, they invite you.  Jesus told the host to invite people who were poor and sick.  Why would he do that?  <because to truly give, you must not be thinking about yourself and what you will receive later>  The poor and sick people would never be able to give anything back to the host of the party.  By inviting them to a place at his table, he would be treating them like they were important.  This is what Jesus asks all of us to do.

    Hand out the poster cut-outs (rectangles) so that the children can put their names on them & create a poster.   

    Hand out the Offertory symbols to color. (The symbol is a Number One).  Ask the older children to write one thing they can do this week to make someone else feel important.
     
    Explain: Color this symbol of the Number One and bring it to the altar (don’t forget to put your name on the back!)  to show that we have learned about putting others first.

    If there is time, ask questions and go over the lessons one more time to help the children remember.

    Give out stickers and hand-outs as they leave.

    Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time  C




    Dear Parents,

               Today is the Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time.  The children listened to simplified versions of two of the same readings you did: Sirach 3:17-18, 20 and Luke 14:1, 7-14.

    Symbol: Number One

    To reinforce at home:
    In today’s readings, we take a look at the people that our society calls Number One and compared them with the people that Jesus put first.

    Activities to do at home:

    *Prepare a meal for someone who is sick or has had difficulties like a sickness or death. If you don’t know anyone personally, prepare a meal you can freeze ahead (like lasagna) and call your church office to locate someone that the meal would help.
    *Designate part of your freezer or pantry for “give-away foods”.  You can stock up on “buy 1, get 1 free” offers for the food pantry or you can make and freeze breads to donate for church-sponsored receptions.
